Foundation English – Elementary

Foundation English - Elementary

The Foundation English course is designed to equip learners (students) with the essential English language skills needed to communicate effectively in class as well at their future workplace.

The Foundation English course is mapped to the ACT English Proficiency Programme (EPP) that consists of three levels of English proficiency:

  • Elementary – Modules EPP 1A and EPP 1B (2.5 to 3.5 IELTS equivalent)
  • Intermediate – Modules EPP 2A and EPP 2B (3.5 to 4.5 IELTS equivalent)
  • Advanced – Modules EPP 3A and EPP 3B (4.5 to 6.0 IELTS equivalent)

The course adopted ACT EPP’s materials and activities, which are aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR). The CEFR levels equate to levels in other international standardized English levels such as TOEFL and IELTS. Learners (Students) will be assessed through ACT EPP’s online summative assessment at the end of the course.

The broad aims of the course are for learners (students) to:

  • develop skills and abilities to effectively use English for international communication.
  • identify and develop skills and strategies for more effective language learning and learning ‘how to learn’.
  • develop overall competence in English with the emphasis on the macro skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
  • develop an awareness and understanding of the culture of English-speaking people.

‘The World Learners’ Challenge’ is the theme featured throughout the three course levels. This theme creates a sense of purpose and continuity through the learners’ (students’) English learning journey.

This elementary level English course focuses on establishing a robust foundation in English for beginner learners by consolidating and developing basic communication skills aligned with CEFR A1 (IELTS 2.5) and A2 (IELTS 3.5) levels.
